Busby School is committed to excellence in teaching and we strive to meet the needs of all of our students within an inclusive environment.
In Language Arts, we subscribe to a comprehensive literacy program where students have the opportunity to participate in rich literacy experiences each day. Teachers are working to implement the reading and writing workshop models (Lucy Calkins) to ensure students have opportunities to interact with varieties of genres of text. Students also participate in daily word work activities and oral language skills are woven into all aspects of learning throughout the day.
We believe that the best way to improve students’ overall thinking skills and academic success is through reading. We are running the “Bobcat Book Club” to encourage students to read for 30 minutes each day. It does not have to be 30 minutes at one time and there is flexibility for busy days.
In Math, students participate in a math fluency block for 10-15 minutes at the beginning of each class. Teachers are working collaboratively to build a common vocabulary from year to year. Mathletics licenses have been purchased by our Busby PAC Society to help with review at school and at home. Please ask your child’s teacher for his/her username and password if you would like to access this program at home.
In Science, we strive to provide many hands on experiences to allow students to experience things in different ways. Teachers also bring in guest speakers, encourage students to participate in the Local and Regional Science Fairs in the Spring each year, and go on field trips that relate to the field of Science.
